2023/24 Wednesday transfer thread...

Bit of a poor man’s Kiernan Davis but he certainly matches the type of player we seem to want to sign. Absolute units who no one wants to have to play against physically. On its own it wouldn’t be enough (obviously) but alongside one of the loans we seem to want it could be alright. I just think Smith probably gives us that already unless he moves on.

Oh dear.

Remember him well from his time at Hearts. Not really much of a goalscorer. A bit of a unit though. His strength is his key component, so to speak. Otherwise, I seriously doubt he would have had any kind of football career.

Isn't that Fletcher already?

I am quite keen on ones that can pass a ball to a team mate. I appreciate for players on 10k a week I am perhaps being too demanding

Any good? We needed a midfielder anyway but now Mo is out for several weeks (my physiotherapy degree called it right then) then I think it’s vital we get reinforcements here. I know he was a let down on the whole but I miss FDB

Has Momo’s injury been confirmed?

Opening day and that was it, waste of fucking time for the rest of it. Knew he was off so couldn't give a fuck. What are you missing?

I don’t think it is, he applied himself brilliantly whenever he got on the ball. It’s a lack of understanding of the game. A top coach will have no problems teaching and developing him as a player in that respect

Yeah, like when Portsmouth (?)  caught him dithering with the ball and scored on the breakaway.

Plenty of talk that Vaulks is off to Derby.

It would be a shame to see him go, last season we were talking of having a midfield 3 fit for the Championship in Bannan, Byers and Vaulks and although he's had a less than auspicious start to the season, I wouldn't ship him off. He's been a fantastic ambassador for the club too and is definitely someone who can play a part even if, his current form isn't sparkling.

Let's be honest, he's not the only one who hasn't had a good start.

The other side of this is perhaps the Championship is a greater standard than we thought.

I certainly think in terms of speed of thought and movement we are below the average level. Now that might be new system, a lack of confidence playing a part or is it evidence that some will not be able to step up.

I give Palmer as an example, Smith another, appears Xisco has made that call on James and Johnson.

No room for sentiment

We have probably been guilty of too much sentiment over the years to the detriment of the squad so in some respects Xisco is bringing us to where a lot of modern clubs are.

I think the standard has definitely improved throughout the Championship in the 2 years since we were last there although must admit from a distance thought it looked poor last season.

Vaulks is an odd one, and perhaps he needs games. The challenge he had last season was when he was pressed, he frequently gave the ball away or played people in trouble. What has been noticeable is the intensity of the press, and this has been in every game this season. So his weaknesses get horribly exposed.

When he faced the play, he was good, and he is good defensively.

I wouldn’t get rid, but, he would only play in certain games. We need players with quicker thought, who can take the ball on the half turn, and who have mobility.

On another note, massive day today. What we do today will determine whether we stop up or not.

We need a minimum of three, and ideally four.

Left Back, Two central midfield players and a goalscorer. We need to spend on the striker - the ones who are linked are not great.

If we were to get Buckley/Hendricks and Hayden - that’s good business. But we need a striker who’s going to get us 15 goals this season.

I didn't watch a great deal of the Championship last season and what I did can't say I was enthused. But that is probably testimony to the fact there is fine margins between most the teams. OK always be the ex Prem League side that stands out, but Reading and Wigan only dropped because of the off field issues really.

So there are fine margins at stake, which means you cannot have any weak links in any position, your tactics have to be spot on, no round pegs in square holes (unless injuries dictate)

KM makes some good points on how Vaulks looks exposed, Byers perhaps if not back to full fitness, Bannan has the mind but not necessarily the legs

Last season in a few games Vaulks was having to do the work of 2 / 3 players to cover deficiencies in the team and managed to get away with.  Now at the higher level he cannot do this hence looking exposed .

Sure he would benefit from having Momo with him in midfield but we will probably not get chance to see that.

Byers is critical, but, we need 40 games out of him, and not 25. He is Championship quality, and actually, last season our long run was him, Vaulks and Bannan in the three playing right to left we looked very strong in midfield. The issue with all three of them was always going to be a lack mobility. Bannan and Byers have quick brains and are busy, Vaulks is high energy but not the quickest.

What we have seen this season is midfields packed with pace centrally. Every team we have faced have been able to get up and down the pitch at pace, and have midfield players doing second man runs for fun. Above all else, to close space quickly. And that’s what we don’t have, and what we need to get. The reason why our possession stats are so bad is because we are awful at getting the ball back, and equally awful at keeping it for more than 10 passes.

Torn on Vaulks as i can see the point on the speed and comfort on the ball in the league generally but prior to his (harsh) “error” at Cardiff he added something different to the game. He’s also the only fit midfielder who can do the designated cdm role effectively to free up others. Diaby and Hayden both more suited to the league but both have injury issues.

I guess if he’s in the final year it forces our hand a bit, but he’s one of those “solid citizens” Moore referred to and even if more limited it’s those kind of players that you need in a fight just as we fought our way out of L1

I think the idea is Momo or Hayden does the job of two at this level just due to their ability to cover so much ground.
