Managerial Merry Go Round 22/23

It’s achievable, but needs serious investment to do it. Using those two clubs as an example, they have absolutely elite scouting networks and very good academies that took several years to build. Both clubs effectively ripped everything up and started again from the ground up.

We would have to do the same.

We’d ultimately be like a team like Huddersfield or Hull if we made it to the premier league in the next 2-3 years. We’d not have the infrastructure in place. Now, would a year in the PL allow us to put the foundations in? Perhaps, if we are smart, then yes - and we could be a bit like a Norwich or a Burnley, perhaps we can then develop into a Brighton given that we are historically a big club.

But, and despite the division above being awful at the minute. We are a country mile off being a threat a division above.

Your ambitions are depressing

The first game back in the First Division in 1984 v Forest appeared on my YouTube account when I was looking for yesterday’s highlights.

Thought I’d give it a watch, I’ve not seen it in years. Martin Tyler starts going on about how the fans have had to put up with being in the wilderness for 14years…..

Anyway, I agree I can’t see Soton coming in for DM but stranger things have happened and let’s face it he didn’t do a bad job at WBA when he got it briefly. Still, can’t see it.

Not sure Tyler will be still working by the time we return from the wilderness

They’re doomed are the Saints. They’ve got some bang average players for the Premier League. Ward Prowse aside.

They were woeful against a Wolves side that had 10 men for the majority of the game.

I thought they had all these succession plans regarding managers and players, so no idea why the next appointment is taking so long?!

I’m still amazed Nathan Jones was on their ‘succession plan’

It was a ridiculous appointment. He was awful at Stoke, and I could never get overly carried away at his job at Luton to be honest. When a manager starts blaming everyone else for the issues, he’s going to get sacked. He’s got a bit of Garry Monk about him, a very unjustified overinflated opinion of himself.

Saints are in a mess though. If you keep selling high and buying low, bad recruitment will catch up with you if the production line stops producing.

Problem with Southampton is they have a cracking academy set up that seems to falter at the last hurdle. Only Ward-Prouse has made it with the first team, out of his crop (although Matt Target is at Newcastle). In the past the academy has generated over £300m for the club but it seems to have downturned in the recent past. Josh Sims (remember him?) Is struggling for game time at Ross County.

They turned their u23s into a B team in 2020 and they even have specialist coaches that work 1 on 1 with players to try and bring them through, but out of the 12 they have out on loan only 4 are with League clubs.

One of the 'stars' of the latest batch should be playing against us as Caleb Watts is at Morecambe. But his stats suggest he's a way off from competing for a first team spot, even in the championship.

Anyone think McKenna could be next to go?

Decent team, plenty of quality in the squad, expectations high and being met until… Underperforming, fans a bit restless, are the players happy? Are the bosses?

Has the owner the balls to do a Milan Mandaric and bring in a new man for a late unbeaten promotion run in?

I think if we'd beaten them Saturday and the gap had been 8 points their chairman could have got twitchy. Big game for them tonight, away at Bristol Rovers, long journey and a team that's going to have a go at them.

Do we only get 2 points for a win these days?

Bristol Rovers are in a right shit run of form.
