24/25 Wednesday transfer thread

Recommended Posts

The quote I saw a few weeks ago had Rohl as saying (so not a journalist inferring) something along the lines of “don’t want many pre season matches”, “want to concentrate on the coaching / training camp”, “two matches at most”.

I concluded (guess) that there’ll be a game in Germany and one/two back home, but the last will be no less than 10-14 days before kick off.

He said he didn't want a lot of games during camps, one a week at most, so that he could get a full week's training in between matches and not waste the camp on game preparation. On a normal year, preseason is usually about 6 weeks long.

His quote sounded like it was more a 'were going to camp to train' and less of a '2 week sunshine tour with 4 exhibition games and a bit of training in between.'

It also sounded like each week will be focused on a different thing, so likely he will want some sort of game at the end of each week to consolidate and test.

DR wants 14 days each at both the UK and the one in Germany.

Been told that with Middlewood having more work done to it that we're negotiating with Loughborough Uni to use their facilities as DR wants a proper sports science set up. There are alternatives being looked at (including possibly at St Georges) but he wants it outside of Sheffield. We probably won't go over to Germany til after the Euros or at least as close to the final as possible.

The pre season training budget is sizeable

Was there ever confirmation whether Kevin Beadell had left the club or not? Someone on here reckoned he had as he was only temporary but they may have gotten mixed up with Luke Dowling who did come in on a temporary basis.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kevin-beadell/profil/trainer/114551 Still has him as being at the club and I haven't heard anything about him leaving although someone mentioned there was a German bloke being lined up as head of recruitment.

@Alan Finney Luke Dowling was fanfared as our new Technical Director, then left soon after the end of the window as that was always going to be the case but it was never publicly broadcast.

I think Beadell was brought in on a similar contract, mainly due to Rohl not being able to get his own specialist in for January, but after that Beadell has been kept on to help DR and his team source possible future signings. This would makes sense as it takes the pressure off the backroom team and allowed them to concentrate on the immediate. Beadell having been Arsenal's lead U23 scout in Europe and UK will have put him in good stead to do the role

He says he wants 1 game a week.

Preseason is more than 2 weeks long, he just wants 2 week long camps within the longer preseason.

Right, if that’s the case then I misheard it, and I’d apologise!

Yeah, just seems a bit of a strange one, I know Dowling was temporary just to get us over the hump of Downes leaving but I just thought Beadell was brought in on a more permanent basis, then we haven't heard from him since (well I haven't). Some saying he was only temporary/consultant I think confused Dowling and Beadell, still no wiser now, is he still with us or left do you know? Suppose we may hear from him soon. Along with Fridays announcement maybe.😂

Could have misheard it myself. You never really know when people are speaking in second languages, what he says and what he wants to say aren't necessarily the same thing.

We'll probably know by this time next week.

TBH, if it's 1/2/3/10 I'm not that bothered either way... I trust DR to get it right.

I did take to Twitter and asked Crann and Miller about him, didn't get an answer though so I took that to mean they don't have a clue either, which doesn't surprise me. Probably forgot all about him as well, I mean, FFS, it's not like they're pulled out with work is it.

They're probably both waiting for Hargreaves to tell them what to write

Happy with that statement.

Try to get all those that played a significant role in the second half of last season back for next year. If they all re-sign and we get Ugbo, Beadle and Poveda back, there’s still ten departures. Plenty of scope for significant squad improvement.

Of those, I expect that Dawson will turn it down and do a Wildsmith, ie drop down a division to become a number 1 somewhere.

Windass will have offers, so I guess we'll find out how much he does love it here.

Pretty sure that the others will stay.

That is massively underwhelming.

Does not bode well for DR putting his own systems in place unless these contracts are on massively reduced rates.

Based on what? Rohl has rewarded those who did Well for him with new deals but with enough scope to improve with the spaces in the squad.

To be honest anyone could and should have seen exactly that happening, I named the players he'd keep the other day on a thread and as @Owling_Wolfsaid in the thread he'll be looking at evolution and not revolution which has failed previously although I couldn't quote exactly what he said. The future is bright, get on board matey and don't fall into the 1867 trap of hoping for failure to be proved right.

Just to ask I take this to mean that the players he wants to keep will now enter into contract negotiations? So it doesn't mean there'll definitely be with us next season. Would that be correct? I'd hope at least there's been conversations and some intention at least to come to agreement between players and club.

They've been offered contracts by the club.

Surprised about taking the option on Neymarv, he did VERY well by and large under DR. But didn't think we'd keep him around due to his age.

Same here along with Palmer.

We had the potential of 18 first team players leaving. It's hardly surprising that we might retain around half of those IMO.

Pretty much as expected except perhaps Dawson. Suspect offered terms to reflect likely experienced back up keeper. Bonus that we've  been able to cut Delgado loose.

One or two might decline terms offered but the list is a solid core of proven championship players and trusted by Röhl. Scope to add some extra quality now that the pruning has been done.

So far, so good.

Probably going in the basis a third of them will not accept the new terms, already have offers in place.

So we'll see what arises

Johnson is the interesting one given the rumours about attitude toward the end of the season, but its good Rohl sees beyond it.

Good balance between continuity and potential new signings

Had to laugh at a comment on X from someone who wasn’t impressed with the list :  “hard to believe they’re Rohl’s choices”.

The implication is pretty clear and will be the flavour of the summer for some of our fans : good signings are down to Rohl, crap signings are Chansiri’s fault.

Poveda and Pedersen were both DCs choices according to X in January.

Only one who surprised me on the retained list was Dawson.

Reesh is spot on, he's rewarded those who dug in and got us out the mess we were in.

Out of all the players we had on loan, I'd love to see

Beadle

Ugbo

Poveda (long as he can look after that hamstring of his)

Paterson and Johnson I didn’t anticipate but the rest were expected. I understand why we’re taking up both options though.

As the rational amongst us have said and seen, retaining all those players makes a lot of sense. For the spirit of the team, if nothing else. They won’t be guaranteed to start, they will know that. The majority of them; if they sign, will do so in the knowledge that they probably won’t play as many games next season as they did this. But they have also shown they can dig deep, adapt to Rohl’s style and they’ve got bags of experience to help the new players that come in. Most of those offered new contracts are 30+. If they have any ambitions towards coaching, management and such beyond their playing days, they’ll stay here. Play a little less, learn a tonne more.

Most of them have been here for a few years, they’ll be settled. I think they’ll also recognise that next season will be a lot better than this as we’ll not be starting on -15 games, plus we’ll surely make some interesting signings over the summer. It’s those players that we should be excited about.

I agree that Dawson might leave to get more game time, that’s understandable. Paterson might want to go back to Hearts. I think the others will sign.

Looking forward to the summer recruitment.

My maths isn’t great but I make that , if everyone accepts, a squad of 19. Some under contract may leave, some offered contracts may not stay. Plenty of scope for DR to put his stamp on things 👍
