mkowl Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Jeez read the news about the Nottingham Panthers player dying after an accident in Sheffield last night on the ice. Quote
EBRA Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Awful event .. I’ve seen the incident truly a freak accident. 8k in arena last night lots of upset people plus the other player involved will be going through lots of issues RIP and thoughts with all involved. Quote
TheExile Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Probably the worst sporting injury that will happen. How’s it taken this to ensure that the neck is protected in a game where everyone has blades on their feet? Quote

Andyben Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 .. At Rovrum perhaps @Reesh. Awful news about the poor lad 1 Quote
Beaconowl Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 This sad news has been broadcast across Canada this morning RIP Quote
owl4ever1867 Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Awful news, a tragic accident. I felt numb last night after reading about it, I hoped the lad would pull through but sadly it weren't to be. The lad Petgrave will need alot of help mentally with what happened. RIP Adam Johnson 1 Quote

Canterburyowl Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Saw the incident on twitter, looked horrific, not sure what the player was trying to do with his foot up like that unless he slipped. Quote

Having watched the video, from what I can make out Pergrave deflected off the other Panthers player & seems to lose his balance & hence why he leg went up into the air, I've had a ST at Steelers & been to many a game over the years & hits like that are the norm, you don't realise how fast the game actually is until you've been, it was just a freak accident that has cost Johnson his life, Petgrave will be absolutely distraught. Personally I don't think he'll play for Steelers again after that incident as something like that is mentally damaging to a person. My heart breaks for his family, friends & team mates & I still feel numb about it all. Quote
80s Owl Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 I read about the incident on Saturday evening but never imagined it would lead to a fatality, absolutely tragic RIP to the guy and sympathy to Petgrave as he will be devastated. Quote
HoylandOwl Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Apparently SYP are investigating it. But I suppose that’s normal when someone passes away in ‘different’ circumstances Quote
Andyben Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 That'll be another 3k off our attendance then Quote

Skamp Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Won’t the Sheffield player get a charge of involuntary manslaughter? No chance of a record or anything though. Boxers have to go through it, don’t they? Eubank? Quote

Not commenting on this case but you can imagine a scenario where if it was seen there was deliberate intent, I am thinking head high tackles in rugby that could lead to a fatal injury - would the police take it further. By playing sport are you assuming a potential risk Quote
lobster Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 There have been cases in Rugby for deliberate injury , Commentator John Inverdale being the most high profile .Fortunately there have been no fatalities . Any further action will be up to an Inquest to decide Quote

JBO Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter Quote
Beaconowl Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Not sure how I feel about that. Surely there are more clear cut and serious crimes not being investigated Quote
JBO Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Kung fu kicking someone in the neck with ice skates on is fairly clear cut and serious tbf 1 Quote
mkowl Posted November 14, 2023 Author Posted November 14, 2023 I have chosen not to watch said incident and indeed if the legal route is now being followed we have to be careful what is said. I look at this at a more overall sporting level. Clearly this is an extreme case but you can see somebody elbowing deliberately, rugby with the big high hits, it could happen. The defence was always "it's part and parcel of the game" but this type of legal action could be a bit of a game changer 1 Quote
Andyben Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Doesn't show the incident but gives a good overview of whether it is an accident or not Quote
Reesh Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Its SYP let's not forget, fabricators of evidence, hiding of sexual predators within their ranks. ACAB 1 Quote

Winco Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 First time I’ve watched it looks a bit dodge to me I thought he’d been shoved or tripped but that looks like he’s deliberately put his leg up to fuck him up. I can see why the old bill are sniffing around. Quote
HoylandOwl Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 There's been plenty of talk about something that happened just before the incident, stuff about him being off balance, skating at speed, etc etc. there's so many things at 'play' here. But, putting your foot up, with skates on that high.... It's less than ideal. I wouldn't like to have to make this decision, But, the fact is, Mr Johnson lost his life, and he shouldn't have.. Quote
Tylluan Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 This has ramifications for sport in general. If the arrested party is formally charged and it goes to court then does plod have to investigate 'deliberate' career ending challenges as ABH and GBH allegations? Would it mean the end of 'it happened within the game' justifications? 1 Quote
Tylluan Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 What bothers me, though, is the Elite League is still not enforcing the mandatory wearing of neck guards and the English League, next level down, is only enforcing from next season. The NHL is also not enforcing their wear. Quote

Watching the video that AB has shared shows in better detail his upper body leaning over, that following a minor collision could be just the thing that makes your leg come out and up to stop you decking it? I might be wrong but that seems logical to me. The police should leave this alone, there’s not much chance of a conviction Manslaughter is a lower burden of proof - doesn't require intent - so almost simply your actions killed a person. Could be as simple as a landlord failing to undertake a gas safety check and then a tenant dies after a gas explosion. Quote

No way they’ll get a majority decision on video evidence alone or him supposedly being a dirty player. It could set an interesting precedent that's for sure Quote
Andyben Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 We didn't see a similar upturn after Duncan Ferguson got done for Affray(?) on the pitch, or when Paul Elliott sued another player. This is different. The lad died it deserves to be rsolvd with the full and proper powers of the courts 2 Quote
KrolMong Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 I’ve seen the short and long version of it, it’s horrific, and I’ve got to say, I can understand why a manslaughter charge has been levied. The best way I can describe it is that Adam Johnson, who was on his feet, has been caught in the neck by a skate blade. Remember that he is on his feet. Quote

Otto_Man Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 I know less than nowt about ice hockey, but weren't there a couple of American/Canadian players said they thought it looked intentional? Quote
Teddy Nickelarse Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 SYP appear to think there's a case to answer. Gathering of expert opinions ongoing before CPS decide on whether to proceed to court though. Right and proper that due process is followed and seen to be followed. 1 Quote
