Sheffieldblue Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Captain the first time I saw Wednesday play. RIP Quote
cheat Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 (edited) RIP - never saw him play, but was such a massive name in Wednesday folklore. Edited March 16, 2023 by cheat Quote
Skamp Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 RIP The Don First captain to lead the losing team on a lap of honour at Wembley - mind, it was probably a great day out nonetheless Quote
Owling_Wolf Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Our skipper for my first 3 or 4 seasons watching as a boy, the tail end of his long Wednesday service. The epitome of the word Captain. RIP 'The Don'. Quote
Paul from Wisewood Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 RIP my dad watched him and always had him in his Wednesday all time 11 Quote
Paul from Wisewood Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Know a bloke who played with him at Portland Timbers, (Don would have been in his 40s at the time) and said he was unbelievable Quote
owl4ever1867 Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 RIP Don Megson Thoughts are with all his family & friends at this sad time. Once an Owl, always an Owl. WAWAW 🦉 Quote
EpworthOwl Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 RIP Don Someone for whom the word legend was truly penned. Quote
Andyben Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 RIP Don. There's legends and there's LEGENDS, Don was the latter. Quote
Owling_Wolf Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Two 'modern' Wednesday legends in one pic. Quote
Owling_Wolf Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 The above imagine is not mine but shown from the Owls Official Site article from 2021, reproduced today, "Yesterdays - Birth of an Owls legend." Quote
OwlMR Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Sounds like a unbelievable player and captain, RIP Don. Does this make sense to anyone didnt we come second in 60/61 Quote
Billysboy Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 My biggest memory was him having a perfectly good goal ruled out in the infamous 5-4 win against newly crowned European champions manure. Cracking goal, think somebody else was judged to be offside. Quote

Paul from Wisewood Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Just had a look.. Don didn’t start playing for us until 59, so he must have been carltoned 1 Quote
KrolMong Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Never saw him, but, my dad (who hates Wednesday right down to his core) said that a few of those players from that era were greats. So rest in peace to a Sheffield Wednesday legend who’s family are Wednesday to the core. Quote

bricat Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 We never won the League under Don but when we were second to Spurs in their double year we lost a major game at White Hart Lane 2-1 and at a key point we had a good goal disallowed. Kay won the league at Everton. When Kay was suspended for life from football Everton tried to sue us for the transfer fee but failed. Quote

Was Catterick still our Manager when Kay commited the offence, Bri? Quote
cheat Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 Re Kay’s tweet, I’m guessing old age is making him confused between Wednesday’s challenge in 60-61 and his later success with Everton. Quote
bricat Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 Yes I believe Catterick was in charge then, when he went Everton he made them champions after coming back for Kay. Kay has his own coffee bar/cafe in Southport where he still puts a shift in despite being in his mid 80s. Quote

It just feels a bit strange to be have been sued by them when his manager at the time of the offences was their manager when they tried to sue us. Presumably they felt it wasn't owt to do with him. (Not the offence but the legal situation.) Quote
Lee Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 Vic Buckingham was manager when Kay, swan and Layne backed Ipswich to beat us at Portman road. 1 Quote
HoylandOwl Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Gary Megson thanks everyone for their condolences. 1 Quote
