  1. v Nigeria, 15th August 1981. Won 3-1 in front of 4,116. Scorers, Curran, Mellor, Bannister. Courtesy of The Complete Record not my memory by the way.
  2. This thread has inspired me to get stuff booked. Now have gigs on consecutive nights. Joshua Radin in Leeds on 20th of this month, BC Camplight at Crookes Social Club the following night.
  3. Can’t stand him. He’s not a character - just a wanker.
  4. Jordan Storey’s first Wednesday goal got us the point at Bolton. As his goal gave us the lead he gets two points in the secondary table. 6. I read it to mean that none of them win.
  7. BDM - they were riding high, we were off the pace. Not so much that we won the game, but the fact that we thrashed them. The away wins at both Anfield and Old Trafford in 84-85. To win at both after all those years out of the top flight was the stuff dreams are made of. The 4-4 v Man Utd that’s already been mentioned, could not believe it when we were 3-1 up at half time. More recently - the 3-0 v Arsenal.
  8. Is it two from Wigan, MK, Rotherham and Plymouth? At just five points behind I think Plymouth will surely be thinking they’re still in it. Who do you want to go up, from both a personal choice, and from a benefitting Wednesday point of view. For me it would be Wigan and Plymouth from a personal choice, but perhaps Rotherham and Plymouth from a benefitting Wednesday point of view. From the personal aspect, no way do I ever want MK to progress, and I can’t stand Rotherham, and it would be hilarious if they missed out after looking nailed on for so long. Re from a what’s best for Wednesday perspective- Rotherham’s luck seems to have deserted them a little in recent weeks, they now seem to be getting the results their performances deserve rather than keep spawning wins - although it appears they did manage that in the Pizza final - but I just don’t fancy facing them over two legs with a passionate backing from them. I’d be happy to face them in the final though - I’d fancy us for that. Plymouth - I think the fact that we’ve lost twice down there would play heavy on our minds. Wigan and MK wouldn’t travel in numbers for the Hillsborough leg (or would they?), so I could see us with a rampant crowd behind us getting good results against either.
  9. Saw Glenn Tilbrook at The Devil’s Arse at Castleton the other weekend. Not got anything planned at the moment.
  10. I think Gregory will run away with it, but just want to give honourable mentions to Harlee Dean, who seemed to win just about everything in the air, and BPF, not a massive amount to do, but that save was crucial. That whiny little prick of a number 10 cocked it up somewhat but the save still needed to be made.
  11. On one level it’s a stupid thing to say, but goals make such a difference and show what small margins there are. That defender on the line manages to block Gregory’s header and we’re all doom and gloom, not making the play offs, a good team would have found a way to win that etc etc. But it did go in, and we’re all ecstatic, leaving with that wonderful feeling that only a late winner can give you; and we are going up. Performance would have been exactly the same, but the our perceptions of it chalk and cheese.
  12. Wednesday bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat at Oldham with a straight forward 2-0 away win at Nottingham Forest. The game was settled in the first half with goals from the strike pair of Williams and Hirst. Sheridan back in the side after a two and a half month injury lay off was instrumental in the first, sending Palmer clear down the right. His midfield partner’s cross was despatched by Williams. The second game when Shirtliff headed down from a corner and Hirst swivelled to blast home from the edge of the six yard box. Woods, Nilsson, King, Palmer, Pearson. Shirtliff, Wilson, Sheridan (Harkes), Hirst, Williams, Worthington. Unused sub, Francis
  13. Pre-amble for any new posters/readers Most of you will be up to speed on the famous Alan Harper Award, but just for any new readers, here's a quick explanation. Points are awarded for misdemeanours throughout the season and the player with the most points at the end of the season takes the prestigious award. Points are awarded as follows, Yellow card - 1 point Penalty conceeded - 2 points Penalty missed - 2 points Red card - 3 points Own goal - 3 points Alan Harper was a squad member of the excellent Everton side of the 80s, who always seemed to have a stormer against us - in fact he scored the first goal against us in the 1985-86 F.A. Cup semi final. So when Wednesday signed him for £275,000 in June 1988 it's fair to say that most Wednesdayites were pretty pleased with the signing. Predictably, he then turned out to be absolute garbage for us. It is not his lack of form that sees this competition named after him though, but his antics in a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, in which he conceeded a penalty, scored an own goal and got booked, an impressive 6 points all in one game. The Alan Harper Award was a mainstay of Cheat fanzine between 1989 and 1996, made a return in War of the Monster Turcks in the 00s, and has been resident on Owlsonline since 2006. The Owlsonline winners of the Alan Harper Award are; 2006-07. Tommy Spurr 2007-08. Jermaine Johnson 2008-09. Mark Beevers 2009-10. Lewis Buxton 2010-11. Giles Coke 2011-12. Reda Johnson 2012-13. Miguel Llera 2013-14. Sam Hutchinson 2014-15. Glen Loovens 2015-16. Sam Hutchinson 2016-17. Sam Hutchinson 2017-18. Daniel Pudil 2018-19. Barry Bannan 2019-20. Moses Odubajo 2020-21. Barry Bannan There were yellows for Gregory and Dean v Wimbledon. 14. Pre-amble for new posters/readers The rules for Who got us the points are; In a draw. The player who scores the goal that secures a draw (our first in a 1-1 draw, our second in a 2-2 draw etc) is determined as having earnt us that point; or the defence in the case of a 0-0 draw. The defence's point is shared amongst the keeper and the back four (0.2 points each). In the event of a defensive substitution if the substituted player has completed 70 minutes he'll still get the full 0.2 and the defender who replaces him won't get anything. Anything less than 70 minutes and he'll get 0.1 as will his replacement. For any games where we employ a back five, the keeper and the three centre halfs will be credited with 0.2, the wing backs with 0.1. In a win. The player who scores the goal that made sure we got a draw (our first in a 2-1 or 3-1 win, our second in a 3-2 or 4-2 win) gets one point or the defence in the case of a to nil win, and the player who scores the winner (the second in a 2-1 or a 3-1 win etc) gets two points (as he turned a draw into a win). The Meaningful goals table will follow similar rules but the score at the time of the goal will be the key factor, so a goal that gives us a lead will earn the player two points, regardless of the final result, whilst a goal that puts us level will get a point. A goal that gives us a two goal cushion will get half a point, as will a goal that reduces the deficit to a single goal. Goals that put us three (or more) goals to the good will be considered as just the icing on the cake and won't be rewarded, similarly goals that bring us to within two (or more) goals of the opposition will be considered as mere consolations and hence also not credited. For this table cup goals will count. Hunt’s second goal in as many matches got us our first point v Wimbledon, with Gregory’s injury time winner adding the other two points. In Meaningful Goals both get two points as both goals put us in the lead. Who Got Us The Points Lee Gregory 10 Barry Bannan 7 Callum Paterson 6.3 George Byers 6 Florian Kamberi 5 Own Goals 4 Sam Hutchinson 3.8 Marvin Johnson 3.3 Theo Corbeanu 3.2 Saido Berahino 3 Josh Windass 3 Bailey Peacock-Farrell 2.8 Jack Hunt 2.6Liam Palmer 2.45 Dennis Adeniran 2 Jordan Storey 1.4 Nathaniel Mendez-Laing 1.2 Dominic Iorfa 1.1 Fisayo Dele-Bashiru 1 Massimo Luongo 1Chey Dunkley 0.8 Lewis Gibson 0.3 Ciaran Brennan 0.2 Harlee Dean 0.2 Joe Wildsmith 0.2 Olamide Shopido 0.1 Jaden Brown 0.05 Meaningful Goals Lee Gregory 12.5 Barry Bannan 9.5 Saido Berahino 7 Callum Paterson 7 George Byers 6.5 Josh Windass 6.5 Florian Kamberi 5.5 Dennis Adeniran 4.5 Sylla Sow 4.5 Chey Dunkley 3 Marvin Johnson 3 Theo Corbeanu 2.5 Jack Hunt 2.5Liam Palmer 2 Lewis Wing 2 Fisayo Dele-Bashiru 1 Massimo Luongo 1Nathaniel Mendez-Laing 1 Olamide Shodipo 1 Sam Hutchinson 0.5
  15. Goal a game from now on? Why not now he’s got a taste for it.
  16. The pre-amble for any new posters/readers Four players scoring ten (or more) goals doesn't seem that big a deal, but it rarely happens. We last did it in 2006-07 - Deon Burton (13), Steve MacLean (13), Marcus Tudgay (11) and Chris Brunt (10). Prior to that it was the 90-91 glory season - David Hirst (32), Paul Williams (17), John Sheridan (12) and Nigel Pearson (12). And the one before that, 85-86 - Lee Chapman (15), Brian Marwood (15), Carl Shutt (13) and Mel Sterland (11). So, as you can see, it is that big a deal. For this thread I take the very simplistic calculation of goals scored in the number of games we've had so far and assume that the players will score at the same ratio in the remaining games. So today saw Gregory get to the milestone with his injury time winner v Wimbledon. With at least six games left (but hopefully nine), our leading goal scorer is set to finish the season on 11 (12 if we go all the way). With Bannan on eight, he’s expected to notch one more in the regular season, but to hit the target (just) if we play three play off games as that calculation has him getting another 1.53. Berahino’s next on seven, and also has a projection of one (or two) more. They’re the only realistic contenders in my opinion, so I think it will be another season without getting to the holy grail. Paterson and Byers on six each are just too far off the pace I think.
