Sam Winnall retires ...

Nah. Another Carlos fuck up but because SW was rather 'forthright' he got marginalised when not selected.

Him and Rhodes playing that whole second half of the season could have been something.

Which would have also allowed Hooper to recover slower and longer instead of being rushed back

Win win

Rhodes was on a downfall before we signed him. Paul Lambert and Aitor Karanka ruined him with the style of football that they wanted to play. That season when Lambert took over at Blackburn, he only scored 2 goals (one a pen) from November until he departed for Middlesbrough for 11 million. Then at Middlesbrough, he never really got a run of games despite getting 6 goals in their promotion season. In the PL they took Negredo on loan which all but ended his stay there.

Plus, he needed a partner in the mould of Novak or Gestede. We possibly had that with Nuhiu

Winnalls career at Hillsborough was over the moment he had that bust up at the training ground with that ************

I agree. At the end of that season we had seven strikers/forwards on our books.

Rhodes, Winnall, Fletcher, Forestieri, Joao, Nuhiu and Hooper.

Rhodes needed someone to do all the donkey work and be a focal point. The only two capable were really Fletcher and Nuhiu.

In hindsight, Rhodes and Winnall weren’t what we needed. We needed pace and power to actually get the most out of Hooper and Forestieri (although they both were in the midst of serious injury issues). We needed to be able to stretch teams.

Rhodes had been average at Boro. Wasn’t suited to style here at times but his confidence went after Leeds away.

Winnall seemed better suited for us really as just did basic things like run with the ball and try and get a shot away but Carlos was all about possession. We’d have fared much better in both play off semis with winall on the pitch and he’d done well vs Huddersfield in the league fixture. I think we treated him unfairly compared to Rhodes but it was knee injury at derby which really harmed him
