Alan Harper Award 2023-24

Pre-amble for any new posters/readers

Most of you will be up to speed on the famous Alan Harper Award, but just for any new readers, here's a quick explanation.

Points are awarded for misdemeanours throughout the season and the player with the most points at the end of the season takes the prestigious award. Points are awarded as follows,

Yellow card - 1 point
Penalty conceeded - 2 points
Penalty missed - 2 points
Red card - 3 points
Own goal - 3 points

Alan Harper was a squad member of the excellent Everton side of the 80s, who always seemed to have a stormer against us - in fact he scored the first goal against us in the 1985-86 F.A. Cup semi final. So when Wednesday signed him for £275,000 in June 1988 it's fair to say that most Wednesdayites were pretty pleased with the signing. Predictably, he then turned out to be absolute garbage for us. It is not his lack of form that sees this competition named after him though, but his antics in a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, in which he conceeded a penalty, scored an own goal and got booked, an impressive 6 points all in one game.

The Alan Harper Award was a mainstay of Cheat fanzine between 1989 and 1996, made a return in War of the Monster Turcks in the 00s, and has been resident on Owlsonline since 2006.

The Owlsonline winners of the Alan Harper Award are;

2006-07. Tommy Spurr
2007-08. Jermaine Johnson
2008-09. Mark Beevers
2009-10. Lewis Buxton
2010-11. Giles Coke
2011-12. Reda Johnson
2012-13. Miguel Llera
2013-14. Sam Hutchinson
2014-15. Glen Loovens
2015-16. Sam Hutchinson
2016-17. Sam Hutchinson
2017-18. Daniel Pudil
2018-19. Barry Bannan
2019-20. Moses Odubajo
2020-21. Barry Bannan
2021-22. Barry Bannan
2022-23. Lee Gregory

A nice start to this year’s campaign with four yellows v Southampton.

Well at least the Alan Harper Award has got off to a cracking start.

Reigning champion Gregory takes the lead with two points for conceding the penalty and another for the accompanying yellow card. Paterson made it three yellows in three games, and Windass also went into the ref’s book.

What was that for, btw?  Asking for a yellow for a bloke having dived is all I heard suggested.

I think it must have been.

Anyone else think that was a penalty. We’re on the edge of the Kop penalty area now, so it’s a way away, but it looked it to us.

The one consolation of a shit season is that are are usually plenty of Alan Harper points, and so far that’s the case, with another hatful at Cardiff.

Vaulks leads the way with his two for conceding the penalty, and there were yellows for Bannan, Bernard, Delgado, Paterson, and Windass.

Just catching up with this Mr Cheat.

Does Bannan get any downward points adjustment for winning his red card appeal?

Not sure.

Traditionally I’ve left them on under the premise that he was sent off in the game.

But having said that I did retrospectively give Johnson three points for the Ipswich game last season.

What do people think?

If players have won appeals in the past and no points adjustments were made, best to be consistent and not do so this season.

Have we won many appeals over the years? It's not something I keep track of. Surely we must've been successful, even just the once?!
