Skamp Posted June 27 Posted June 27 (edited) When Aston Villa finished 18th in the Premier League table during the 1994/95 season, they became the first club in league history to have finished in each of the 22 possible positions in the top flight table. Since then, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County (both during the 1998/99 season), Chelsea (2003/04), Tottenham Hotspur (2005/06) and Leicester City (2019/20) have also achieved the same. Some eight clubs have finished in all but one of the 22 top flight positions; Everton (never finishing 21st), Manchester City, Newcastle United and Sunderland (never finishing 22nd), Manchester United (never finishing 20th), Nottingham Forest (never finishing sixth), Sheffield United (never finishing third) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (never finishing 19th). Just for the record: During their 107 seasons at the top flight, Arsenal have finished in each position from 1 to 20 except for 15th place. They came pretty close to doing so, though, during the 1907/08 season, when they (when known as Woolwich Arsenal) finished equal in 14th place with Blackburn Rovers after both clubs had won, drawn and lost the same number of matches and both had scored and conceded the same number of goals. Only two clubs (not making their debut at the top flight) have won the league title without having previously finished in top five. Sunderland did so, when they won their first league title during the 1891/92 season after having finished seventh in their first league season, 1890/91, and Manchester United did the same, when they won their first league title during the 1907/08 season. Before that, finishing eighth during the previous season, 1906/07, was Manchester United’s best final position. Most seasons at the top four tiers: Everton 121 at the first tier, Barnsley 78 at the second tier, Walsall 75 at the third tier and Rochdale 50 seasons at the fourth tier. Everton are the only club having played all 125 league seasons but never below the second tier. Newcastle United are the only club having finished more than once in all top 21 places at the top flight. During their first 14 top flight seasons from 1921/22 to 1960/61, Cardiff City never once finished in the same position. Bury and Notts County are the only clubs having played at least 20 seasons at each of the top four tiers. Grimsby Town hold the record of having finished in must different positions at the top four tiers; 61 in all, 11 different positions at the top flight, 20 at the second tier, 16 at the third, and 14 different positions at the fourth tier. Plymouth Argyle hold the record of having finishing in the same position for most consecutive seasons; finishing second in Division Three South in the six seasons from 1921/22 to 1926/27. Accrington are the only club having played all their seasons at the top flight. Lincoln City and Port Vale share the record of having played most seasons without ever playing at the top flight, 111 – and both also share having a fifth place at the second tier as their best final position. Rochdale hold the record of having played most seasons, 95, at the third and the fourth tier without ever playing at the second tier. Scarborough hold the record of having played most seasons, 12, at the fourth tier without ever playing at the third tier. Fleetwood Town hold the record of having played most seasons, 12, without ever finishing in the same position. No club have finished in each of the 24 possible positions at second tier, but Barnsley only miss out on the top spot. Brentford, Southend United and Swindon Town have finished in each of the 24 possible positions at third tier, and at the fourth tier, Northampton Town hold the record of having finished in most different positions, 22, and missing only ninth and 24th place.
