Speaking to talkSport, Bannan said: "We have not played them (United) for a few years so it would be great if we could get back up and get the rivalry going again because they were great games to be part of. That's what you are in football for for that sort of rivalry and to get the fans going. They are massive teams so hopefully we can get that sorted in the future."

The Owls will be looking to stretch their unbeaten league run to six matches when they visit Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Skipper Bannan, who has played over 300 times for the club since arriving on a free transfer in 2015, said: "We are playing well at the minute

The 32-year-old, one of Wednesday's standout performers this year, admits he has been "surprised" by the standard in the third tier. "It is a tough league," he said. "There are a lot of good teams in it this year.

“These teams have played in the Championship and above. There are a few big teams who spent money in the summer with the hope of getting promoted.

"It has been a competitive league this year. There are a lot of teams that in this league who probably shouldn't be in this league on reputation but they find themselves in here and that's why it is so hard to get out of it."
