I'll relax if we score another 3 goals 🙂

The joy of watching Wednesday is we do and I still panic going into injury time

Second half, DR made attacking subs and reverted back to backing his players to outscore the opposition, which we did comfortably, because the opposition was Derby.  Enjoyable game, and some really good goals.  However more of the usual nonsense defending set pieces and crosses.

What a game. On the right end of a very open game, both sides could have had more goals. The timing of ours killed derby and the focal point has to be Windass. But Beadle won us that game first half

We seemed destined to be stuck on -2 GD 😅

Even at 4-1 I just can't stop panicking. What a wonderful goal from Windass, he can be quality at times. Scores the best goal of the year on the first day of the year (probably). That defence needs stiffening up, they're all over the fxxxxxx shop, need a Glenn Loovens type (I wish).

Looking more and more like a massive step in the right direction this season.

We are crying out for a leader in the back 3/4/5. We have defenders, at an individual level who are good players, and good defenders. Famewo and Lowe are good defenders, Bernard can be a Rolls Royce at times. Ihiekwe is decent when the game is in front of him.

But, none of them have that leadership and organizer quality that you need at the top end of our league. Today was as clear as it could be. Derby ran the same corner routine probably 6 times in a row. When they caused chaos off the first two, we made no adjustment, we stuck to the zones and they piled in on us. We weren’t even blocking runners out of zone. It was horrifying to watch and only improved second half because Derby’s dead ball delivery quality dropped. A natural defensive leader does not need a coach to tell him that, he will make adjustments as they happen.

But… as I said, we were poor first half. Chalobah was poor, he’s naturally a defensive midfield player, but we looked so unprotected with him in there, and he got caught dawdling so many times that the hook was the right call. The changes at half time made a difference, we looked a more natural back four, they seemed to have more protection centrally, and Lowe moving to left back did a better job of blocking that avenue of play.

Our 1st goal was well worked, the third goal was brilliant from Gassama, the fourth goal was brilliant from Charles. But everyone will rightly talk about Windass’ goal. Which is easily in the top 3 Wednesday goals of my lifetime. The execution of that was just out of this world.

Some positives today, Max Lowe again was good. Ingelsson played well. Charles was good, he’s such a threat when he breaks through the lines. Josh Windass changed the game when he came on, but I thought Gassama was just about MOM today, he was a threat all day, scored a great goal and had Derby’s full backs on toast today. But… and I am going to caveat this today…

Him and Musaba are match winners, but their decision making in our defensive third is not great. Gassama twice overplayed today when he had options AND runners beyond him, Musaba did it once. I am with a fair few on here in that Gassama against Preston didn’t have much help ahead of him leading to the pen. But, they both have this habit of trying to dribble out of trouble even when shown into traffic - they need to show a bit more nouse, especially when teams set traps.

But, good score and create goals and help us win games.

Important win today, not a great performance but a good win.

Listened to Radio Derby's post match call in and the ex pros they had doing the commentary reckoned Chalobah played well. Just goes to show ex pros aren't always the best judge.

The Warne out brigade were out in force again.

Overall we deserved the win, perhaps a two goal cushion too maybe, about right. But I don’t think the opposition were that poor, they were well organised I thought in the main, and strong. What you’d probably expect from a Warne team.

However, they don’t have that guile in possession. And it showed massively. Their chances, and goals came from either set pieces or hopefull crosses, nothing really sliced us open. And that’s credit to the defence, despite having some shaky moments, and as KM has said above, Max Lowe stood out today. He had a cracking game, and with Gassama was up there for MOTM for me. Both played well from the off.

The midfield worked hard, and had to. Chalobah I thought was ok, but he was better at Preston. But the subs changed it without a doubt, Windass was a real breath of fresh air when he came on, he was involved in the build up to the shot Charles had about a minute into the second half, then of course there’s that goal. Wow.

Gassama’s touch beyond his marker that he raced onto was terrific, and he deserved that goal. And, props to Musaba for not giving up after their keeper made a very good stop from his first effort.

Derby might bully a few sides to pick up points but I can’t see them playing through many. They’re functional not fluid, but, you have to play the cards you’re dealt I suppose. It was Nice to score four at home, and get a second win on the bounce. Hopefully that’s three in a couple of days

We probably won't see a better goal than that for a long, long time but Gassamas flick that played the ball in front of their defence for him to run onto was also  superb, the defence was shambolic again and Derby might even have thought they could get something at 3-1. Its been a good festive period though with some entertaining games.

We are scoring goals now.

All about strengthening in the window.

We get that right, and I have confidence we will, then it's the play offs for sure.

I said previously we needed a leader (Loovens). We have some decent defenders, they just need someone to give them some direction.

Chalobah looked good at times, and at others looked way too slow. Rocket up his arse or get rid.

Gassama's goal wasn't too far short of the Windass goal, superb bit of skill. But we have a bit of a paradox here. Playing  Musaba and Gassama and getting hammered in defence. Without a doubt they're great to watch with space in front of them and running at the goal. On the other hand, they're shite at defending and that's why I persist in saying they shouldn't be on the pitch together.

Today they were on the pitch together between the 59 and 74 minutes. Gassama scores on 63 mims and Derby on 68. Gasama off on 74, Musaba scores on 74.

We conceded the first when they were on the pitch together. Yes, they're both fantastic players, but you just can't turn away from the fact that they falling short in defence.

I liked all 4 goals in different ways. The first the build up and Charles' desire to get the ball to cross.

Windass and Gassama speak for themselves, but the inch perfect pass and weight for Musaba's goal deserves a lot of credit

Overall it was good to see us progressing in forward areas. Like most though if we don't sort out the defence then I think it will be difficult to push for the play offs.

But it's not dull

Made the 7 News sports headlines here, "One of the best goals ever seen "

Course then they show the Beckham fluke

Sky Sports News showed other goals of a similar ilk.  Josh is certainly in good company with Becks, Rooney, Alonso and Kane.   Think Josh's was better.  Charlie Adam's was also excellent for Stoke especially as Courtois was in the net.

Just on Derby.

Considering the resources he has, Warne has done a fairly decent job. I have a lot of time for him as a person and a coach.

They will just about have enough to stop up, they are a bit of a throwback, they are direct, decent from set pieces, they have pace out wide and they get it forward quick. But to counter that, they have no pace defensively and the back four seem very uncomfortable in possession.

Their style will keep them up as if you have an off day, they will beat you.

Watching the goal back (again), the unsung heroes are the 1000 Derby fans stood motionless in the bottom tier as the ball drops into the net.
If he’d scored this goal against, say, Swansea or Preston, the empty blue seats just wouldn't have the same effect.

Fair play one or two of them actually applauded. Sometimes you just have to.

Pretty sure I would have done. Sometimes the power of football, its greatness, takes over from the usual parochial partiality. Only for a moment, mind.

My mate, on the other hand, would have been screaming a string of obscenities, nailed on!

Pretty sure that in that situation, I would have done both.

Would have been a good exam paper argument. 'Compare and contrast...'

I did after the actual game.

Gassama was Owen v Argentina

Windass Beckham v Wimbledon
