Pre-amble for any new posters/readers

Most of you will be up to speed on the famous Alan Harper Award, but just for any new readers, here's a quick explanation.

Points are awarded for misdemeanours throughout the season and the player with the most points at the end of the season takes the prestigious award. Points are awarded as follows,

Yellow card - 1 point
Penalty conceeded - 2 points
Penalty missed - 2 points
Red card - 3 points
Own goal - 3 points

Alan Harper was a squad member of the excellent Everton side of the 80s, who always seemed to have a stormer against us - in fact he scored the first goal against us in the 1985-86 F.A. Cup semi final. So when Wednesday signed him for £275,000 in June 1988 it's fair to say that most Wednesdayites were pretty pleased with the signing. Predictably, he then turned out to be absolute garbage for us. It is not his lack of form that sees this competition named after him though, but his antics in a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, in which he conceeded a penalty, scored an own goal and got booked, an impressive 6 points all in one game.

The Alan Harper Award was a mainstay of Cheat fanzine between 1989 and 1996, made a return in War of the Monster Turcks in the 00s, and has been resident on Owlsonline since 2006.

The Owlsonline winners of the Alan Harper Award are;

2006-07. Tommy Spurr
2007-08. Jermaine Johnson
2008-09. Mark Beevers
2009-10. Lewis Buxton
2010-11. Giles Coke
2011-12. Reda Johnson
2012-13. Miguel Llera
2013-14. Sam Hutchinson
2014-15. Glen Loovens
2015-16. Sam Hutchinson
2016-17. Sam Hutchinson
2017-18. Daniel Pudil
2018-19. Barry Bannan
2019-20. Moses Odubajo
2020-21. Barry Bannan
2021-22. Barry Bannan
2022-23. Lee Gregory
2023-24. Barry Bannan

So, a slow start to this season’s competition with just a single yellow card in our opening day win over Plymouth.

Jamal Lowe leads the way.

It’s a bumper points haul for Bernard at Luton. Already booked before the straight red for the penalty, he gets himself a massive six points (one for the booking, two for the penalty, three for the red).

Inglesson also got a yellow

Well at least there all plenty of Alan Harper Award points from our embarrassing defeat to Watford.

Iorfa leads with way with three points for conceding the second penalty and the accompanying yellow card. Bernard grabs himself another two points for the first penalty, and consolidates his already impressive lead. Smith and Jamal Lowe completed the scoring with a point a piece for yellow cards.

For some reason the OS says 4 yellow cards but can only think of 3 Millwall, Sheff Utd and Derby

v Norwich too.

Looks like I didn’t do an update after the game v Utd.

Edit - scrap that, I’m talking nonsense.

It is strange as the OS says 5 yellow cards in that game and the BBC 6

It says 6 what i have seen...

Bannan - SWFC

5 - Derby

Jackson K 90+5 Was the last one...

Might have been missed off?

So, Bannan did have a fifth yellow after all - wonder how many more I’ve missed.

If Bernard didn’t already have this wrapped up, his red card v Stoke has surely settled matters as it puts him ten points clear.

Max Lowe earns three points, two for conceding the penalty and one for the accompanying yellow card, and Charles adds a point  to his total for his first half booking.

How does this compare to other seasons, at half way, are accumulating more or less points, ie bookings than ‘normal’?

Bernard is the outlier, he’s already on a winning total.

Other than him, we’re probably a little behind. At this time last season there were three players on nine points and one on eight, the season prior to that the joint leaders had seven.
