2023/24 Wednesday transfer thread...

Why do they call goalkerpers 'shot stoppers' when they also save headers, crosses, shite backpasses etc?

We need one that can do them all.

Plus, can he save two penalties within 10 minutes or so?

Lazy journalism in my opinion.

I'd imagine this is probably utter bollocks but just seen that Byers is linked with Blackpool??

Their owner has money to spend and wants a playoff push. They wanted Fiorini back but he's gone to Charlton so Byers could be a solution for them if we're happy to let him go.

Byers going could mean his wages going to Conor Coventry and we don't increase our FFP spending

I can't see us letting Byers go but his red card won't have endeared him to Röhl.

Cheers for that Ty.

I’m not convinced that Rohl is a fan of Byers at all. His lack of mobility and legs has really been noticeable at this level, and in a side that wants to press, he’s struggled big time.

I think the same. I don’t think he’s had a great game yet under Rohl. I know he’s been injured a lot so hasn’t had much game time but I’m not convinced he’ll make it at this level with DRs style of play.

That said, we’re hardly blessed with bodies in the middle, so if he was to go I’d expect us to sign another player besides Coventry.

I think there's been some horse trading with Charlton and that's why Bakinson has gone on loan there.

How come we’d need to trade with Charlton on West Ham’s player? Do you mean more just giving them a player to take them out the running?

I still havent heard anything about what the 1867 bunch of wanna-bees think about all this investment and our recent run of good form?

Will they put it all down to the good work of @holmesfield_owl

Tbf the fact our owner has said nothing publicly other than Merry Christmas has probably helped quieten that a bit, alongside more significantly the upturn in form and results.

The one truism is that good news on the pitch keeps the angst off it under the lid.

And that is the crux of it all across football. Less ire at the owner/board, less ire at players/manager, less ire at marketing/media output.

Myles Peart-Harris the latest name linked, any info @Tylluan

Honest opinion. If we're looking at him to be the 10 between the forward line and midfield then give Gassama the job. They're similar sort of players going forward but Gassama puts more of an all round shift in.

Touted as the next Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea's academy. Top scorer in their development squad while playing at the top of a midfield diamond. Had/has a knack of drifting in late to get on the end of pull back crosses and not afraid to hit from distance. Loves to drop a little deep and pick up then drive forward.

But I think Chelsea knew what they were doing when they let him go. Brentford paid around £1.8m for him but he's not kicked on as they thought he would. Ended up in the B team then went to Forest Green last season. 6 goals in 45 games and took the captaincy a couple of times. Played against us in both games. Nothing spectacular while he was there, though. Back in the B team this season though he's recently been on the 1st team bench a few times and came on as a late sub against Luton Brighton and Wolves. He's done 11 mins of PL football. Didn't make their League Cup squad against Newport when a lot of kids did.

Played the second half against Wolves in the FA cup so he's cup tied. He's at fault for the Wolves equaliser as he gives Doyle acres in which to shoot and he has a half chance to score towards the end but it goes wide.

The media is calling him dynamic but he's not one for tracking back and isn't exactly blessed with pace. Watch him on YouTube and he does tend to let players go once they've got past him. If he's being brought in to take the weight off Bannan's shoulders then I don't think he's right.

But if DR thinks he can get a tune out of him then I'll trust his judgement and happily get shot down over what I've just written

@TheExile That's exactly it. Couldn't think of the phrase first off but you're right.

He comes off very flat footed. When Doyle collects the ball he's too far off for a start but doesn't close him down. He then just doesn't react when Doyle shifts feet. You can see him react almost after the shot is away.

Another one of those "The Star understands" pieces with liberal doses of "working behind the scenes".

Genuine questions Tee but when you were at Lincoln did you have to have a word with the local press over this sort of reporting or were you ever tasked with finding out who 'sources' were?

Tbh, the relationship forged by staff at the club with the local media was very positive. There were only a few leaks, because we were always quite transparent when appropriate. And it was a mutual understanding so, if there was anything, they’d ring and they’d largely respect things as we’d give them access when we could, as much as possible

We only really had issues with the Sun (shocking I know!)

So you never leaked a possible player transfer....😉
